I donā€™t know where you are located, but if you plan on fishing shallow water, I would get a Lowrance and get Florida marine tracks if you are in Florida the chip will cost as much as the unit, but it will definitely save your boat

I boat in FL and use Florida Marine Tracks cartography, so I am partial to Navico Brand Products. That typically means Simrad or Lowrance. I have been a happy Lowrance customer for many years, starting with their Elite Ti2 9″ and then later upgrading to a pair of them and then later upgrading to two Lowrance HDS Live units. They work very well and have been extremely reliable.

It will depend on your budget, but for Lowrance, they have an Elite FS 9″ with 3-n-1 Transducer or the HDS Live or HDS Pro. When Lowrance pushes out a new Product (the HDS Pro), they usually flush out the model that it replaces (HDS Live). You can score some good deals on the HDS Live units now that the Pro was released last year.

On my I have a 12″ HDS Live at the console and HDS Live 9″ at the bow. Both are great units.

Class-for-class, Simrad products and Lowrance products are virtually identical. The main differences for the models with both touchscreen and buttons are that Lowrance uses a rocker switch and Simrad uses a dial with a pushbutton. Avoid the low-end units from either. You want glass multi-touch display and zoom in the form of pushbuttons.
