I just bought a 5 hp mercury four stroke from a guy. It is a 2020 and it has not been run into years. Just sitting on the motor stand in the guy’s garage. He had only used it four times, said he didn’t even even get it through the break-in process before he had medical issues. Anyways, after a while I was able to get her to turn over with the choke pulled out over the course of time I was able to get her to start normally, and I guess I blew a lot of the gunk in the carburetor out because now it starts as easy as any outboard I’ve ever owned. I cleaned out the pee hole and she pisses hard enough to bruise the bucket she sitting in. My question to the group, outside of changing the oil, what else should I do? Lower unit fluid? It does look good, but again it’s been sitting for almost 2 years. Definitely purrs like a kitten now, but should I get carb cleaner anyway? Let me know your thoughts. I’m hoping just a oil change and I’m ready to go.

Do not use seafoam. It will causes issues just like using Ethanol fuel will.

I would definitely change oil and lower gear case oil also use marine gas stabilizer whether you use regular gas or non ethanol gas

Get some clean gas and run it.

What about the impeller?

finish break in and then bring it to a merc dealer for 20 hour check and see what they say! If no warranty transferred to you bring it to a Tohatsu dealer for 20 hour check, it most likely will be cheaper!

Drain fuel completely, Clean Carb Completely, Run nothing but Ethanol Free Fuel.

Use Seafoam in your gas all the time! I sold them (they are a Tohatsu) and all these small engines hate ethanol fuel
